Sept 10 Anacortes – Bellingham

Susan Bob Mark Paul me

Today we left Bob and Susan’s beautiful house in Anacortes and biked up to Bellingham after Bob gave us a ride up over the Big bridge.! It’s funny how the bridge only has a bike lane on one side !?!   The road was hilly but had beautiful views of mountains in the distance including Mt Baker.  We passed through small towns and men fishing in the river for salmon. We actually were on the MS bike route and there were lots of bikers on the road.  We stopped st the Oyster. Bar along the way and met Paul for soup and salad. Delicious. Paul met us at the campground and dropped off our stuff and he then headed back to Seattle and then home. Mark and I set up our tents, met everyone and had a great dinner.

it was a great day!

Sept 7- Orcas Island

We headed out today to tour the Island . Our first stop was Constitution Mountain. It was a fun  curvy ascent by car- well fun for me, but not my passengers as I was driving! Great viewpoints although it is still smoky outside. We bought sandwiches and had a picnic at West beach resort. We stopped at pretty Doe Bay where they are having an Imagine music and arts festival this weekend. In the afternoon I had  a massage by the sea! It was a great massage. She used tuning forks, steel bowls and hot rocks. Unusual but very effective! For dinner we went to Mijitas a local Mexican restaurant. We sat outside and since it was a little chilly they had gauchos that you could wear. I was nice and warm. Great dinner of Dungenous crab enchiladas!

Sept 6- heading to Anacortes

  •  Today we got up to very smoky conditions. We heard Sunrise, Wa on the east side of Mt Rainier was evVuated due to fires close by. So we headed out and spotted some deer ruining by. Maybe they smelt the smoke as well! We made it to Anacortes where we met Susan and Bob Cummings. They were are neighbors in Marlboro, Ma and Bob picked up our bikes from the local bike store where we had them shipped to. We had a wonderful lunch with them and then Mark and I biked to the ferry and met Paul and Janet  who drove the car there. We had to bike as we don’t have a bike rack or room in the car for bikes. But it was good cause we tested our bikes out after being shipped. We had s wonderful ferry ride to Orcas Iskand. It was still smoky and couldn’t see in the distance but we passed many fishing boats, sailboats and pleasure boats. Once we arrived at Orcas Island Mark and I biked to our hotel which really tested me out as it was quite up hill. We stayed at the Outlook Inn which is a quaint hotel in Eastsound. At night we went to Random Restaurant which had Thai food and open mike for musicians. Quite the assortment of entertainers and Eliza Rickman was the opening act. She played the glockenspiel, piano, ukulele, kid piano, bells and other instruments which I had No idea what they were. She had a beautiful voice and is very whimsical. Look  her up on Google. .It was a great day!

Sept 5- Mt Rainier

Today Mark, Janet and I climbed the skyline Trail up Mt Rainier. We hiked the length of the Falmouth Road Race which is 7.1 miles! It is a loop trail and we started up the steeper section first as it is a mile shorter. We passed by beautiful vistas of Mt Rainier, its glaciers, waterfalls, flowers, snow, and streams. We saw many chipmunks and marmots. We saw hikers heading up to Camp Muir which is base camp to Mt Rainier. We had lunch at the top with a chipmunk who wanted our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. One side of the trail was quite dry but ascending the mountain we came across lots of green moss and flowers. It is quite the ecosystem! The temperature was 86, yes 86 today. and there was smoke in the air from the fires in Washington. It was a Great day !

Sept 4- Mt Rainier

Today we drove to Mt Rainier and stopped along the way to see the beautiful waterfalls. Once we arrived at Paradise Inn, we quickly unpacked the car and headed up the trail to Myrtle Falls.       At Paradise Inn there is no wifi, no tv and no cell service! It was us and nature at its best!                It was a great day.

Today we took a tour with Argosy tours on Lake Elliot and saw many house boats as well as expensive estates.
